CLASS X PATOL BABU, THE FILM STAR

 1. Nishikanto's offer stirred Patol Babu to the core. Comment.

Ans. Nishikanto Gosh's offer to Patol Babu stirred him to the core because it was beyond his wildest dreams. Patol Babu was a 52-year-old man who had been retrenched from his job and had never expected anyone to even think of him as an actor or even consider him for any role at this ripe age of 52. Nishikanto's brother-in-law, who worked in film production, recommended Patol for the role of a short, bald-headed character in a film.

2. How did Patol Babu react? Why?

Based on Ans 1, this question can be handled.

3. Why did Patol Babu lose his first job in Calcutta?

Ans. Patol Babu, worked in Hudson and Kimberly in Calcutta and was living in Nepal Bhattacharji Lane. He lost his job because of retrenchment in the office.

4. How does Patol Babu reconcile to the dialogue given to him?

Ans. Patol Babu reconciles to the dialogue given to him by recollecting the words of his mentor and guru Mr. Gogon Pakrashi. He used to say to Patol Babu that as an artist his aim is to utilise the opportunity to squeeze the last drop of meaning out of his lines. An actor's duty was to treat every word of his dialogue like a fruit of a tree. He should get its essence and serve it to the audience for adulation.

5. Q. e) can be written based on the Ans 4 given above.

Q 6. 'Patol Babu was a meticulous man.' Elucidate.

Ans. Patol Babu had to say only one word “Oh!” Patol Babu began giving the exclamation a different inflection each time he uttered it. After doing it for a number of times he made an astonishing discovery. The same exclamation when spoken in different ways, carried different shades of meaning. He suddenly felt that he could write a whole thesis on that one exclamation. A true actor could make a mark with this one single syllable.

Q 7. Money and satisfaction are like parallel banks of a stream. How does this statement correspond to Patol Babu's emotion, after the shot was over?

Ans. Money and satisfaction are like parallel banks of a stream correspond to Patol Babu's emotion, after the shot was over because he valued satisfaction of his performance over money. As an actor he was more concerned with creative satisfaction than money. He did not even bother to collect the payment that was due to him for the work done as he felt that the creative satisfaction that he had got from his performance couldn't be equated with any amount of money.

Q 8. Why did Mr. Mullick turn down Patol Babu's request for a rehearsal?

Ans. Mr. Mullick turned down Patol Babu’s request for a rehearsal and shook his head impatiently as there was a large patch of cloud approaching and the scene was to be shot in the sunlight.

Q 9. What were the special touches that Patol Babu gave to his role to make it more authentic?

Ans. Patol Babu told Mr. Mullick that if he had a newspaper open in his hand and if the collision took place while he had his eyes on the paper then perhaps the scene would be more authentic.

Q 10 'I hope the part calls for some dialogue?' Who say this? Why does he/she ask this question?

Ans. Patol says this line to Naresh Dutt. Patol Babu had a real passion for theatre and as a young man, was always in demand by the various theatrical groups around his neighbourhood. So when Naresh Dutt approached him with the role, he saw an opportunity to showcase his talent as well as give a new lease of life to his love of acting. Therefore, he wanted to know whether the part had some dialogue delivery too.

Q 11. 'Were these people pulling his leg? Was the whole thing a gigantic hoax? A meek, harmless man like him, and they had to drag him to the middle of the city to make a laughing stock out of him? How could anyone be so cruel?' Why does Patol Babu have these thoughts?

Ans. The reason for Patol Babu having such kind of thoughts was that the dialogue that he was given shocked him. It was for the first time that Patol Babu has got an opportunity to act in a film. Till now he had acted on the stage. He was very excited. He reaches the shooting site at the designated time. After watching the film shoot for sometime, he asked for his dialogue so that he could memorise and rehearse it.

All he had to do was to collide with the hero and utter “oh”. He was very disappointed. He expected a small role with some dialogues but here he just had to utter a monosyllable. Patol Babu was a very good actor and he thought that by giving him such an insignificant role they had made a mockery of him and his acting skills.

Q 12. Patol Babu is an amateur actor for whom walk-on part in a movie turns into an ultimate challenge. Discuss.

Ans. Patol Babu is surprised and happy to be offered a role in a movie, but is disappointed by the small part he is given. He feels cheated and humiliated when he learns he only has to say the word "Oh!". However, he is reminded of his mentor's words that "however small a part, never consider it beneath your dignity to accept it".

He rehearses his part, choosing a secluded spot to practice. He practices enunciating "Oh!" in different ways, and how he would twist his features in pain, fling his arms, and crouch his body to express pain and surprise. Patol Babu realizes that a monosyllabic exclamation can be said in different ways and carry different meanings. He mixes anguish, surprise, and irritation to utter "Oh!" and gives a wonderful performance. Patol Babu feels satisfied with his performance and that all those years of struggle have not blunted his sensibility.

Q 13. Do you believe with the statement that Patol Babu is a practical man who comes to terms with whatever life has to offer? Give reasons for your answer.

Ans. Yes, Patol Babu is a practical man who comes to terms with whatever life has to offer him. He struggled to make a living after losing his job as a clerk. He worked in a Bengali firm, opened a variety shop, and worked as an insurance agent.

Patol Babu believed that performance was more important than the size of the role. He gave a sterling performance in a small role as a pedestrian in a film, and walked away without accepting payment.

Q 14. Why does Patol Babu walk away......

Ans. This can be written based on Ans no. 7
