CLASSES VI - X GRAMMAR - NOUN
Noun refers to
persons, animals, places, things, ideas or events etc. Noun includes most of
the words of the language. E.g., Ram, Sita, dog, cat, London, Australia, bat,
ball, happiness, devotion etc.
Types of Noun
1# Proper Noun
– is a name which refers only to a single person, place or thing and there is
no common name to it. It always begins with a Capital letter. E.g., Sydney,
Sapna etc
2# Common Noun
– is a name for something which is common for many things, persons, or places.
It includes a particular type like Country (it refers to any country), student
etc.
3# Abstract
Noun – is a word for something that cannot be seen like ideas, qualities,
conditions etc. E.g., kindness, truth, friendship etc
4# Concrete
Noun – it is the opposite of abstract noun i.e., something that has a physical
existence. E.g., chair, table, water, sugar etc.
5# Countable
Noun – is that can be counted. It is preceded by an article (a, an, the). E.g.,
chair, table etc
6# Uncountable
Noun – is a noun that cannot be counted. E.g., water, sugar, oil etc.
v Abstract nouns and proper nouns are always uncountable
noun, but common nouns and concrete nouns can be both countable and uncountable
nouns. E.g., sugar, water etc
7# Collective
Noun – it is a word for a group of things, people or animals like family, team,
cattle etc
8# Compound
Noun – is a word made up of two or more words forming word with hyphen or
without hyphen as a single. E.g., mailbox, son-in-law etc.
