Answer the following questions:

1. Where was Kalpana Chawla born? Why is she called an Indian - American?
Ans. Kalpana Chawla was born in Karnal District, Haryana. She is called an Indian - American as she was born in India and got married to an American and became an American citizen.

2. When and why did she go to the US? Who did she marry?
Ans. After completing her Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering, she went to the US to pursue the master's degree. She got married to flight instructor Jean-Pierre Harrison.

3. How did she become an astronaut? What gave her the idea that she could be an astronaut?
Ans. Kalpana had got a Bachelor's degree before she went the US. She completed her Master's and earned her PhD in aerospace engineering. In 1994 she was selected by NASA for training as an astronaut. She was encouraged by the people around her.

4. What abilities must an astronaut have according to the journalist?
Ans. According to the journalist a person should possess immense ability to become an astronaut. They should know about everything from biology to astrophysics to aeronautical engineering. In fact they should have an encyclopaedic knowledge.

5. Describe Kalpana Chawla's first mission in space?
Ans. Kalpana's first space mission in the space shuttle, Columbia, was 15 days, 16 hours and 34 minutes long. Among her colleagues were a Japanese and an Ukranian astronaut. They performed  many experiments.

6. What does Kalpana Chawla say about pursuing a dream? Do you agree with her that success is possible?
Ans. In a message sent from aboard the space shuttle to students of her college in Chandigarh, Kalpana said that it is possible to achieve success if you dream to do it. The only thing one needs to possess is the courage to pursue it. She did it inspite of hailing from a small town. Yes, I do agree with her. If there is a will, there is a way and we just need to believe in our abilities to do so.
