CLASS VII CHAPTER 2 A GIFT OF CHAPPALS

1. What is the secret that Meena shares with Mridu in the backyard?
Ans. Meena shares with Mridu that they had found a kitten and that they had kept it hidden in the backyard.

2. How does Ravi get milk for the kitten?
Ans. Ravi brings the milk from the kitchen saying that he was feeling hungry. However, he has to drink most of it so that he can prove to his grandmother that he was indeed hungry. Then he empties the remaining milk into a coconut shell for the kitten.

3. Who does he say the kitten's ancestors are? Do you believe him?
Ans. Ravi said that the kitten's ancestors were the lions of the Pallava Kings, the Mahabalipuram Rishi-cat, emblem of the Pallava dynasty.

4. What was the noise that startled Mridu and frightened Mahendran?
Ans. It was the screeching sound coming out of Lalli's violin that startled Mridu and frightened Mahendran.

5. Had the beggar come to Rukku Manni's house for the first time? Give reasons for your answer.
Ans. No, the beggar has been coming to Rukku Manni's house for last one week. The beggar himself  says that he had survived for a week because of Rukku Manni's kindness.

6. "A sharp V shaped line had formed between her eyebrows." What does it suggests to you about Rukku Manni's mood?
Ans. The V-shaped line suggests that Rukku Manni was angry at the children and was about to lose her temper.

7. Describe the music teacher as seen from the window.
Ans. The music teacher was a bony figure. He was a bald headed man with a fringe of oiled hair falling around his ears and an old fashioned tuft. A gold chain shined around his neck and a diamond ring glittered on his hand. He wore a gold bordered dhoti and his ugly looking big toe could be seen from beneath the dhoti.

8. What makes Mridu conclude that the beggar has no money to buy chappals? What does she suggest to show her concern?
Ans. The beggar shows his feet to the children. There were large peeling blisters on the soles of his bare feet. This made Mridu conclude that the beggar had no money to buy chappals. She suggests that they should give an old pair of chappals to the beggar.

9. "Have you children......" she began, and then, seeing they were curiously quiet, went on more slowly, "seen anyone lurking around the verandah?"
i) What do you think Rukku Manni really wanted to ask?
ii) Why did she change her question?
iii) What did she think had happened?
Ans. Rukku Manni really wanted to ask whether the children had seen the chappals in the verandah, however, seeing them quiet and behaving curiously she changed her question.

Seeing their queer behaviour she might have thought that the children had their hand in the disappearance of the chappals.

10. On getting Gopu Mama's chappals, the music teacher tried not to look too happy. Why?
Ans. Music teacher's chappals were quite old, however, he lies to Lalli that they were new. Gopu Mama had hardly used his chappals and the music teacher was quite happy to get the almost brand chappals instead of his old ones. However, he didnt want the chidlren to realise that he was happy, so tried to look upset.

11. On getting a gift of chappals, the beggar vanished in a minute. Why was he in such a hurry to leave?
Ans. The beggar knew that the chappals were given by the children without the permission of the elders. So he knew that if the elders came to know of the matter, it might be taken back from him, due to this reason he vanished from there.

12. Walking towards the kitchen with Mridu and Meena, Rukku Manni began to laugh. What made her laugh?
Ans. Rukku Manni laughed imagining Gopu Mama looking for his chappals as soon as he comes back from work. She also laughed thinking what excuse she would give for the missing chappals and what would be his reaction.
